I Should Have Known Better
By Lauren Novo
This post is dually-inspired. Ever since Rowena asked, “What’s your Monologue?” a few weeks ago, I’ve been thinking about various potential responses. And throughout March, dubbed #bemyguest month, I’ve searched for opportunities to write outside my PR niche, just for fun. With that said, I present three mini monologues – themed “I Should Have Known Better” – for your amusement and enjoyment (hopefully).
Confessions of an iPhone-aholic
Last week I fell in love. With a phone. But not just any phone. An iPhone. The most magnificent piece of technology I’ve ever owned. I used to think I didn’t need one. I was fine with my flop of a flip-phone. It made calls; texted well. Who needs internet? I was wrong. I need internet. I need to tweet on the go; post facebook statuses; check my email. I’m currently playing three different games of “words with friends” (Scrabble). I planned to get a smart phone after graduation in May. A Blackberry most likely. But I heard it over and over again – get an iPhone, get an iPhone. So I looked into it. I went into AT&T and even the Blackberry-carrying salesman said iPhone was the way to go. I told my Dad and a day later an iPhone was sitting on my bed. An early graduation gift. I was thrilled, but knew it was just a phone. I thought my life would resume as normal…I should have known better.
The Only Thing I Lost was 100 Bucks
I’m not one to fall for infomercials or even commercials for that matter. I’ve taken intro to Advertising and know the drill. I know there’s always fine print, even if you can’t read it clearly, and if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. (Except for the iPhone – see above). But something about the Ab Circle Pro caught my attention. Use it for two weeks and lose 10 pounds. Or your money back. Of course, you have to also eat well and exercise in other ways too, and the shipping cost alone makes returning the machine pointless. But still, the testimonies were touching; and every concern I had was addressed. What can this machine do for your ab workout that crunches and other equipment can’t? It keeps the tension on your core instead of on your neck and back. Plus, it adds a considerable cardio element. Brilliant! I wanted it; felt I needed it. But I wasn’t willing to shell out more than 200 dollars (even in installments) for it. So I waited. And then I found it on Ebay. New. Just $100. I ordered it. And I used it. And I enjoyed it. It did feel like a good workout. But the machine is falling apart. And so far, all I’ve lost is $100. I should have known better.
I’m a shameful, GRE flake
Graduate school. Work. Graduate school. Work. I’ve weighed these two options throughout most of my undergraduate career. I’ve always been one to look forward; to have a plan of action. I wanted to know what was coming after May 2010. So I bought a GRE prep book in May 2009. Just in case. I spent most of last summer sifting through endless vocabulary flashcards and relearning years of basic math. My plan was to take the test in August 2009. But then I got busy. And then I decided I was definitely going to get a few years of experience before pursuing an advanced degree. So I figured there was no rush in taking the test. The longer I waited, the longer the test results would stay active. But now it’s March 2010 and all I recall from my vocab cards is “intransigent.” I will no doubt need to start from scratch if and when I decide to go back to school. I should have known better.
I’m sure I’m not the only one out there who has a confession or two to make…when’s the last time you should have known better?
